Williamson County Senate District Conventions (SD5 and SD24)
A Senate District Convention (also called SD Convention) is a key part of the state’s political party convention process for the Republican Party of Texas.
Texas has 31 state senate districts, and counties can be split across multiple senate districts (especially in larger counties like Williamson). When a county, like Williamson, is divided among two or more senate districts, separate Senate District Conventions are held instead for each portion of the county in a different senate district.
At the Senate District Conventions, you can expect to:
– Review and act on resolutions (policy proposals or platform planks) that were submitted and passed at the precinct level, deciding which ones advance to the state convention for potential inclusion in the party’s official platform.
– Review and act on proposed Legislative Priorities
– Elect delegates and alternates to represent the senate district at the state party convention.
– Handle other party business, such as electing temporary/permanent officers for the convention, adopting rules, or addressing committee reports.
This is an opportunity for the grassroots local party activists to shape the party’s priorities, rules, and leadership for the upcoming biennium.
How and Why You Should Participate
People get involved to influence the party platform (e.g., pushing resolutions on issues like taxes, education, or spending), help select state convention delegates (who then influence bigger decisions like national delegates in presidential years), network with activists, run for party positions, or simply support their party’s grassroots efforts.
